Mother's Day Luncheon 2025 - Mothers for Justice and Equality
We held our 11th Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon on May 10th, 2025 to honor and celebrate mothers who have led by example, overcome trauma, and are consistent role models to their children and communities. To support the mothers in their recovery, we recognized six local moms with Courage and Conviction Awards. These awards are given to women who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership in advocating for the safety and well-being of children at risk of falling victim to street violence. Joining in the celebration included Monalisa Smith, Founder, President & CEO of Mothers for Justice and Equality, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and Boston City Councilor President Ruthzee Louijeune. Congratulations to Porsha Abrams (Hyde Park), Timya Blake (Mattapan), Leneise James (Dorchester), Leslie Milton (Dorchester), Nikia Shell (Dorchester), Christa Torres (Brookline) for all you do for our community!

Mothers for Justice and Equality 3x3 Basketball Tournament 2024
As spring approaches and the warm weather emerges, for many, it's a beautiful time of year when families are naturally drawn to outdoor, public spaces. On one side of the city, cherry blossoms bloom in Boston Gardens, and families enjoy the beauty of the spring flowers. But on the other side, our side, fear emerges instead. As the warm weather rises, so does the anxiety of community violence. To help relieve the tension of community anxiety, our Youth Department hosted their first ever 3x3 Basketball Throwdown on April 19th at Norfolk Park, kicking off our 2024 community rallies. We infiltrated a space where crime and violence are high to establish a sense of safety and community and remind the public that violence IS NOT OKAY. The free, family-friendly, public event brought over 100 members of our community together. We had thrilling basketball games that kept sports fans on the edge of their seats! And we didn't forget the little ones -- we made sure they had a fantastic and engaging time at our STEM table, filled with soapy bubbles and bubbly smiles. Laughter and comradery filled the air at Norfolk Park and fun was had by all! Learn more about MJE here: https://mothersforjusticeandequality.org/

Dignity & Connection
How does a person become homeless? I started this project to find an answer. In 2016, I put out a social media post asking the people of Beverly, Massachusetts for their stories. A woman messaged me saying that her husband works at the River House Homeless Shelter in Beverly. "Dignity & Connection" introduces us to two individuals at the River House with extraordinarily different lives. Despite their radically different backgrounds, they both underwent emotional, physical, and sometimes self-inflicted traumas. The project started with two separate audio interviews. One man wanted to be anonymous, and the other, William, did not. After I edited the audio interviews, I went back to William and asked to video record him writing down his story. Anonymous did not want to be video recorded or have his name in the project, but was eager to have his story be part of this documentary. Then, I went out on my own and video recorded places that relate to the two men; such as going to a specific location where a traumatic event occurred, or recording activities that were described by the men to create visual metaphors. After compiling these two stories, I found that the answer to my question is that homelessness can happen to anyone.
